To use a digital thermometer to check your body temperature, you need to follow these steps:
- Turn on the thermometer and make sure the screen is clear. If it shows any previous reading, press the reset button to clear it.
- Choose the location where you want to measure your temperature. You can use a digital thermometer to measure the temperature in your mouth, ear, armpit, or rectum. However, different locations may give slightly different results, so you should use the same location every time for consistency.
- If you are using the thermometer in your mouth, make sure you have not eaten or drunk anything hot or cold for at least 15 minutes before taking your temperature. Place the tip of the thermometer under your tongue and close your mouth around it. Do not bite or talk while the thermometer is in your mouth.
- If you are using the thermometer in your ear, make sure the ear canal is clean and dry. Gently pull your ear up and back to straighten the ear canal. Insert the tip of the thermometer gently into your ear until it fits snugly. Do not push or twist the thermometer too hard as it may hurt your ear or damage the device.
- If you are using the thermometer in your armpit, make sure the armpit is dry and not covered by clothing. Lift your arm and place the tip of the thermometer in the center of your armpit. Press your arm against your body to hold the thermometer in place.
- If you are using the thermometer in your rectum, make sure you lubricate the tip of the thermometer with some petroleum jelly or water-based lubricant. Lie down on your side and bend your knees toward your chest. Gently insert the tip of the thermometer about half an inch into your rectum. Do not force or move the thermometer as it may cause injury or discomfort.
- Wait for the thermometer to beep or flash to indicate that it has finished measuring your temperature. This may take a few seconds to a minute depending on the type and location of the thermometer.
- Remove the thermometer and read the result on the screen. The result will be shown in degrees Celsius (°C) or Fahrenheit (°F) depending on the setting of the device. You can switch between °C and °F by pressing a button on some models of thermometers.
- Clean the thermometer with alcohol or soap and water after each use and store it in a dry and cool place. Do not share your thermometer with others without disinfecting it first.
